FAQ
What chainsaws can I use with the ClampMill?
The ClampMill is compatible with most standard chainsaws on the market. For the best performance, we recommend chainsaws with a power output of at least 3 kW / 50cc. You can use any hobby or professional chainsaw that fits at least a 45 cm (18-inch) bar. While a more powerful chainsaw is not mandatory, it will provide a smoother and more efficient milling experience. In our demonstration videos, we use the Stihl MS 261 chainsaw, which is an excellent choice for both performance and reliability.
How long of a chainsaw blade can I use?
The ClampMill is currently designed to support 45 cm (18-inch) and 50 cm (20-inch) chainsaw bars. While you can use a longer bar, the current bar clamps determine the maximum cutting width. In 2025, we plan to introduce a simple add-on that will enable the use of longer chainsaw bars for greater flexibility.
What chain grinding angle is best for cutting lumber with the ClampMill?
For optimal performance when milling lumber, we recommend sharpening your chainsaw chain to a 10-degree grinding angle. This lower angle ensures smoother, more precise cuts and reduces the strain on your chainsaw during horizontal milling. Always use a sharp chain and maintain it regularly for the best results.
Can one person operate the ClampMill?
Yes! The ClampMill is designed for solo operation, with patented features like one-click saw attachment and an intuitive log-clamping system to make setup and usage quick and easy. However, operating in a pair can make the process even more efficient and enjoyable—one person can focus on milling while the other stacks the lumber and prepares the next log, ensuring a smoother workflow and a more collaborative experience.
Is the prototype in the video the same as the product I will receive?
The product you will receive is a fully manufactured version that may look slightly different and improved compared to the prototype shown in the videos and pictures. While the functionality remains the same or even better, certain design details have been upgraded. For example, some parts of the prototype are painted, but the final product features electrogalvanized components for enhanced durability and quality.
What materials can I mill with the ClampMill?
The ClampMill is ideal for milling softwoods and hardwoods. It works best with freshly cut logs but can handle seasoned wood with proper technique and a sharp chain.
How portable is the ClampMill?
The ClampMill is lightweight and compact, making it easy to transport and set up in remote locations. It’s perfect for on-site milling in forests, backyards, or construction areas. When disassembled, the ClampMill measures just ca 1.2 meters (47 inches) in length, making it convenient to carry and store.
What kind of projects is the ClampMill suitable for?
The ClampMill is perfect for a wide range of projects, from DIY furniture and raised garden beds to shelves, flooring, and even small cabins. It’s a versatile tool for both hobbyists and professionals.
Do I need prior experience to use the ClampMill?
Not at all! The ClampMill is designed to be user-friendly, even for beginners. Our intuitive features make milling accessible, while experienced users will appreciate the efficiency and precision it offers.
How do I attach the ClampMill to a log?
The ClampMill features a unique patented clamping system that securely attaches to logs in seconds, without the need for additional tools or complex adjustments.
What maintenance does the ClampMill require?
The ClampMill is low-maintenance. After each use, we recommend cleaning the mill to remove sawdust and debris, inspecting the components for wear, and ensuring all bolts and attachments are secure.
Is the ClampMill safe to use?
Yes, safety is a top priority. The ClampMill is designed with stability and control in mind. Always follow the user manual, wear appropriate safety gear (gloves, goggles, etc.), and ensure your chainsaw is in good working condition.
How long of a log can I mill with the ClampMill?
The standard ClampMill supports logs up to 2.7 meters (8.9 feet) in length. However, the main beam is extendable. Starting in April 2025, we will offer 1.1-meter (43-inch) extensions, allowing you to add multiple extensions to mill even longer logs.
How wide of a log can the ClampMill handle?
The ClampMill can handle logs up to 32 cm (12.60 inches) wide with a 45 cm (18-inch) chainsaw bar, and up to 37 cm (14.57 inches) wide with a 50 cm (20-inch) chainsaw bar. In 2025, we will introduce a simple add-on to support longer chainsaw bars and wider logs for even more versatility.
